As part of Ethiopiaโs ongoing digital health transformation agenda, a five-day Electronic Medical Records (EMR) Customization and Deployment Training was successfully conducted in Gondar from February 10โ14, 2025. This capacity-building initiative, organized by the University of Gondar โ Center for Digital Health and Implementation Science (CDHi) in collaboration with the Amhara Regional Health Bureau (ARHB), aimed to enhance the technical expertise of health professionals in customizing and deploying the Bahmni EMR system to support the regionโs healthcare digitalization efforts. Participants included health informatics professionals and IT experts from five hospitals in the Amhara region: Debre Markos Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Dessie Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, Debre Tabor General Hospital, Felege Hiwot Comprehensive Specialized Hospital, and Debre Birhan Comprehensive Specialized Hospital.
The training brought together hospital leadership, health information system officers, IT professionals, and clinical staff, providing them with hands-on experience in system customization, deployment, and optimization to ensure a seamless rollout and sustained use of Bahmni across their respective facilities.
Focus Areas of the Training
This intensive program was designed to equip hospitals with practical skills in tailoring Bahmni EMR to meet local healthcare needs, ensuring system interoperability, and strengthening data-driven decision-making.
Key focus areas included:
- Customization and Workflow Alignment
- System Deployment and Technical Infrastructure
- Interoperability and Data Standardization
We would like to thank all facilitators, partners, and participants for their dedication to advancing digital health in Ethiopia and look forward to seeing the impact of this training, as CDHi and ARHB continue providing technical support and mentorship to ensure the effective implementation and scaling of the EMR system while informing future digital health workforce initiatives.
