
University of Gondar’s CBMP Program launches LIHKET 2.0 Post-Doctoral Degree Program this week during the Institute of Public Health PhD Week.

LIHKET (EXCELLENCE) 2.0 Post-Doctoral Degree Program has been launched at University of Gondar in collaboration with the CBMP partnership this Week.
The CBMP (Capacity Building and Mentorship Program) partnership has been implemented over the past six years to strengthen Ethiopia’s health information system. It involves the Ministry of Health, regional health bureaus, and six universities in Ethiopia, including University of Gondar, Addis Ababa University, Hawassa University, Haramaya University, Jimma University, and Mekelle University. This tripartite partnership was established to enhance the health information system, create model institutions, support the information revolution agenda, and strengthen partner institutions through supportive supervision, capacity-building and evidence generation. The six CBMP universities are working with 100 woreda’s in various regions of the country. University of Gondar is focusing on capacity-building in the Amhara, Benishangul-Gumuz, and Afar regions.
LIHKET 1.0 was a program implemented in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, University of Gondar focusing on health capacity building. After successful implementation of LIHKET 1.0 program, the CBMP launched a two-year postdoctoral program called “LIHKET 2.0” on February 4, 2025, focusing on health systems research and digital health information, led by the University of Gondar, in collaboration with the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, and the CBMP universities.
The program aims to improve information and utilization, provide support and training for post-Doctoral scholars, and strengthen the application of research in the six CBMP universities.
Professor Binyam Tilahun, the CBMP partnership director and the university research vice president, emphasized that CBMP will continue to focus on capacity building, training health system experts, and institutionalizing implementation science research capacity in the six CBMP universities. We need to build the capacity of universities to ensure we provide the necessary high level technical assistance to the health system. For this, I am glad we will be working with the strong LIHKET plateform”
Dr. Asrat Atsedeweyn, President of Gondar University, attended the program launch and delivered a message. “As we celebrate the 70th anniversary of University of Gondar and the 100th anniversary of its hospital, I congratulate you all once again. The celebration will continue, and I urge you all to contribute to this success,” he said. He highlighted that since its establishment, CBMP has successfully strengthened institutional capacity, including our hospital EMR implementation, and engaged in research and digital health, solidifying the university’s position as a center of excellence. He emphasized the importance of all stakeholders asking, “What is expected of me!?” and working collaboratively. He also called on everyone to do their part in our journey to make University of Gondar autonomous.
The exemplary University of Gondar’s IPH PhD Week, which includes advisory scholars, PhD candidates, and senior staffs, is being held at the university’s College of Medicine and Health Sciences Mintwab Hall starting from February 4, 2025.
