
Destaw Fetene (PhD)
Assistant Professor of Epidemiology
Dr Destaw Fetene Teshome is an Assistant Professor of Epidemiology at the Institute of Public Health, University of Gondar, Ethiopia. Since joining the University in 2015, he has played a critical role in advancing public health research and education at one of Ethiopia’s leading medical institutions.
Dr Destaw received his PhD in Epidemiology and Public Health from the University of Gondar following his undergraduate studies at Jimma University. Since July 2023, he has been coordinating the Non-Communicable Diseases Treatment and Research Centre at the University of Gondar.
With almost 16 years of academic and 10 years of research experience, he has made significant contributions to the scientific community. He has authored and co-authored 43 peer-reviewed publications, many of which are highly cited and influential in the fields of noncommunicable diseases, maternal and child health, data quality, and health systems implementation research. His work often focuses on improving health outcomes through evidence-based interventions and enhancing the quality and use of routine health information systems.
Beyond his research, Dr. Destaw is deeply committed to academic mentorship and capacity building. He actively supervises graduate students, manages research projects, and contributes to the development of innovative methodologies for public health studies.
Dr Destaw is currently working as a postdoctoral researcher on the Lihiket 2.0 project, a joint initiative of the Ethiopian Public Health Institute, CBPM Universities, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. His postdoctoral research focuses on health system implementation science, with particular emphasis on improving the quality and utilisation of routine health information system data in Ethiopia. His ongoing work aims to improve the management of hypertension by utilizing better data quality and evidence-based decision making within the health system.
