Amare Tariku (MSc, PhD)
Associate Professor
Dr. Amare Tariku is an Associate Professor of Nutrition and Public Health at the Institute of Public Health, University of Gondar. He is working as an Implementation Research Scientist in the Capacity Building and Mentorship Partnership (CBMP) program, with Center for Digital Health and Implementation Science (CDHI)-University of Gondar. Dr. Amare is working in close collaboration with Federal Ministry of Health, Ethiopia. He is serving as a researcher in the Global Digital Health Exemplar project of the University of Gondar and Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Amare completed his postdoctoral research fellowships (2022-2024) in Pediatric Infectious Disease and Nutrition at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (Harvard University); and in Health System Research with London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in collaboration with University of Gondar & Ethiopian Public Health Institute. His postdoctoral research projects were on infant nutrition equity, and quality of care for child pneumonia and Sever Acute Malnutrition comorbidity. He is a co-investigator of the maternal health project in humanitarian settings of Ethiopia funded by Research for Health in Humanitarian Crisis. He earned his Ph.D. in Public Health and MSc. in Human Nutrition at the University of Gondar in 2022 and 2013, respectively. His PhD was on childhood pneumonia, which was part of the national community-based child health evaluation project of the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and four Ethiopian universities. It was funded by the Bill & Malinda Gates Foundation.
Dr. Amare has 10 years of research and academic experiences, and published more than 60 articles as a principal and co-author at international peer-reviewed journals. His research experience and interest mainly focuses on maternal, newborn and child health and nutrition, digital health, health system, and implementation science researches. He is a co-investigator of the Dabat Research Center (Ethiopia), and an affiliated researcher in postdoctoral studies at Karolinska Institutet (Sweden). He is also Honorary Associate Professor at the Addis Continental Institute of Public Health, Ethiopia. Dr. Amare is the secretary for the national Scale-Up-Nutrition (SUN) academia network. He supervised 50+ MSc /MPH students and co-supervising Ph.D. students in Public Health and Nutrition. Dr. Amare is an academic editor of PLOS ONE.
