Prominent Researcher from the University of Gondar recognized by the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics (IAHSI), Representing Africa
Dr. Binyam Chakilu Tilahun ( Binyam Tilahun, Ph.D.) has been named a fellow of the International Academy of Health Sciences Informatics (IAHSI) during the 19th World Congress on Medical and Health Informatics, held this week in Sydney, Australia. The prestigious honor, bestowed by the International Medical Informatics Association (IMIA), recognizes Dr. Binyam’s exceptional contributions and expertise in biomedical and health informatics. He is the sole fellow elected from Africa this year, joining a select group of internationally accomplished peers celebrated for their significant achievements in the field.
Prof. Kaija Saranto, President of IAHSI said,
“It is an honor and pleasure to announce the nomination, one of the highest honors in the international field of biomedical and health informatics. On behalf of all the Academy and its Board, we welcome and look forward to their contributions to the Academy’s ongoing initiatives, objectives and goals.”
Currently serving as an Associate Professor of Public Health Informatics and Vice President for Research and Technology Transfer at the University of Gondar, Dr. Binyam is a distinguished researcher and the leader of the eHealthLab Ethiopia with more than 150 peer-reviewed publications. He also closely works with Federal Ministry of Health Ethiopia and Africa CDC to advance digital Health in the continent.
Expressing gratitude for the nomination, Dr. Binyam acknowledged the honor as a significant milestone in his career and responsibility to further advance digital health in Africa. Although unable to attend the ceremony in Sydney this week, he highlighted his commitment to nurturing future digital health leaders. Dr. Binyam said “ I am aware I am the only one nominated from the African HELINA region this year which I take it as an assignment to work more, as Africa needs more digital Health leaders. We are currently developing a public Health informatics fellowship program with Africa CDC which I believe will help us nurture more future digital Health leaders to the continent and future IAHSI fellows.”
Before his return to the University of Gondar, Dr. Binyam gained valuable international experience, living across three continents for more than a decade. He served as a postdoctoral researcher at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada, worked as a research associate and PhD fellow at the University of Munster in Germany, and pursued his master’s studies as an EU Erasmus Mundus Fellow in Europe.
